After a major and very genuine consultation LBH Streetscene commissioned the rebuilding of my street, John Campbell Road in Dalston. Funded by Transport for London and part of a huge Olympics tidy of Dalston, in return for 5 months of noise and disruption we got lovely reclaimed York stone paving and granite cobble parking bays. We even got some replacement trees.
Sadly we did not get a lot more trees or green space or a car free road. However what limited the green was not Streetscene but residents and their car dependance. The Council might have agree to no cars and a denser tree scape but residents would have none of it. Predictably after 5 months without their cars outside their doors the more enlightened residents realised their mistake, all too late. The leason of the story being some people can be detached from the cars but only after they've been deprived of what they think they needed.
Oh we also had a great party to celebrate.
