These are haws, you can eat these...Russell correct me if I'm wrong but these are the precursors to apples, I believe?

Yes the haws are edible.  In fact hawthorn is an excellent edible tree in that both the haws and leaves are very good for the heart.  Tea infusions with leaves and haws or fresh new leaves as salad.

Hawthorns (Crataegus) are part the huge rose family which includes not just apples but plums, cherries and pears. Not sure about evolution of which came first.
