This beautiful toadstool is rather rare but now is a great time to see it in Abney Park cemetery. Abney is a strong hold for this little wonder of nature. It grows only on very rotten wood under shade. In Abney it occurs on fallen and decaying poplars. This particular specimen can be found near the war memorial. South of the memorial there is a dead poplar with huge brown and white bracket fungi (Artist's fungus - Ganoderma australe). Just behind the dead tree is a hollow log. The orange fungus is inside the log. Be quick they only last a few days and often get eaten by squirrels and mice.
